This book has an unbelievable number of typos/grammatical errors... and it is still a great book to me.This book is perfect for somebody who already knows how to program in a C++ like language and is just trying to get a better feel for Objective-C... weeks before reading this book I read another Objective-C book (that is twice as big with smaller font) and this book made me feel like I don't need anymore. I've read dozens of C++/C/PHP/Perl/AS/VB/Java/many more etc., etc... books years ago so I am just getting back into coding with Objective-C and this book is an easy, very quick read that really does cover the essentials like the title says :)
Its rare to find a book that delivers on what you really need to know like this. I don't know if the author had anybody edit but even with all the mistakes I'll be reading this book again probably in months to come and this book is up there with my favorite programming books ever, thanks!
This book is so great I rarely do this but I looked up all his other titles just so I can buy them too hopefully he teaches just as well in his other books.

ObjectiveC 20 Essentials Second Edition eBook Neil Smyth Reviews
I have read quite a few Objective C books. Or, I've tried to at least. This is the only one that I've liked. It's really, really good. It's succinct and gets right to the point, yet it's very easy to understand. If you know a programming language, you can easily learn Objective C with this book. Get it.
Good aid th Obj-C use
Perfect book for experienced c or c++ or c# programmer who is new to obj c. Easily read it in a weekend and seemed to hit the topics I needed help with.
I don't think I will need another book on this subject.
If you are experienced programming in any C-like language (C, C++, Java, PHP, etc.) and you understand pointers, this book will quickly get you off the ground with Objective-C. There are a number of obvious typos in the book and the version which I read on my iPad had some formatting issues in code listings, but overall this is a well-written book jam-packed with well-presented info. Unlike a lot of Obj-C books available, this one is up to date. Cocoa here I come!
I am totally new to the Mac OS X, iOS, C, and Objective-C environments. My prior programming experience is with Microsoft Visual FoxPro (albeit OOP). However, the owner of my company has decided he would rather carry an iPad on the road than a Windows-driven laptop. So..... after recently purchasing "iPad iOS 5 Development Essentials" by the same author, I realized I needed major help with Objective-C itself. This book has met those needs!
I expected to receive a thick, old-style programming reference manual that (unrealistically) would contain examples solving several of my problems. Instead this book is frighteningly thin, with 31 very short concise chapters, many of which are only 4-5 pages long. But after just two weeks I've discovered that this book has taught the skills necessary for solving coding issues on my own. Particularly helpful were the chapters on Pointers and Indirection, Synthesizers and Dot Notation, and handling of String and Number Objects. Many of the other chapters provide correct Objective-C syntax for programming concepts with which I am already familiar. Again, there were no examples even close to my applications. Rather the book has provided foundation training so I can begin programming on my own.
