Rachel Weaver Mason returns to Deer Run when her mother in law passes away and leaves her home to Rachel and her nine year old daughter, Mandy. Rachel was raised Amish but fell in love and ran off to marry Ronnie Mason, an Englischer, against the wishes of her family and Ronnie's as well. Ronnie was killed in a wreck so mother and daughter have moved back to Deer Run for a new start and to turn the Mason home into a bed and breakfast. No one really welcomes them back but Rachel's fourteen year old brother, Benjamin. But Benjamin is involved in something that has him upset and Rachel is determined to find out. After a shaky start, Rachel connects with Ronnie's old friend Colin and he works with Rachel to figure what is going on with Benjamin. A neighbor, Meredith King, also welcomes Rachel back as they rekindle a friendship from twenty years old ago. Rachel, Meredith and a third friend, Lainey Colton spent the summer running around together and having fun. At the time Lainey was visiting her aunt, Rebecca, who lives a couple of houses down the street and hasn't returned to Deer Run since that summer.

This is another good suspenseful read by Marta Perry. Someone doesn't want Rachel's efforts to turn the house into a bed and breakfast to be a success. It is always interesting to see how the Amish and English worlds interact as we see Rachel trying to reconnect with her family and figure out what has Benjamin so afraid to talk about what is going.

I love Marta's ability to write complex, lovable characters. Every one of the many of her books I have read has been excellent. I started reading her books because of a free kindle book offer. And now I will buy every one she writes!
I love reading about Marta Perry's Amish characters. Yes, a bit predictable but still entertaining and I lalways earn something about the Amish culture. Her books are a "gentle" romance. Just enough to keep you interested without graphic sex scenes. These suspense/romance books would be great for young teen readers. They are great books when you need a quick read, especially when traveling when you might encounter many interruptions in your reading time.
This book is the first book of a new series by Marta Perry that is set in Amish country. The main character in the book left the Amish faith to marry. She returns to town as a widow trying to provide for her child. But all is not serene in town, and Rachel gets pulled into whatever is going on through the involvement of her brother. When teens start to go missing, the story takes a sinister twist. What is happening in a small town, and what evil is behind it?
Captivating romantic suspense with creepy villains and likable main characters. Well thought out plot without all the long descriptive sex scenes so many books today seem to have.
I enjoy Marta Perry's books. I just can't seem to put them down. There's a little romance, a little mystery, and happy endings for all who deserve them. They always uplift my spirits. The plots of her books are similar; however, her writing is unique enough that if you read one after the other you don't find yourself thinking "gosh, only the names have changed" like so many other authors. Unique characters and unique plots. I recommend all Marta Perry's books.
I carelessly read Book 2 of the Watcher in the Dark series first. Fortunately Ms. Perry was careful not to give away any Book 1 secrets. Both stories are very entertaining, and the mysteries have enough twists and turns to keep you guessing to the end. I love the way she weaves the mysteries and the romance so that the blend is warm and natural. Her heroes are very appealing . . . =) . . . and so are the ladies. Thank you, Ms. Perry for a very enjoyable afternoon. I'm looking forward to Book 3
I like Marta Perry. Her books are well done. They are not too predictable, not too sappy. They have real life characters dealing with real life emotions. They are clean....which limits the author a bit but she handles that well. I am an old English teacher and have read a lot (LOT)of books. This is not Dickens or Wilkey Collins, but it is good, clean, realistic and mildly suspenseful literature which is nice as an escape after a long, sometimes weary day. I teach older teens (college age) and I would recommend them to the students because they deal with human emotions that we all experience. The author deals with real life situations without excessive violence and a modicom of sanity...which hopefully reflect more of the values young people are trying to emulate. It validates emotions without trivializing the small stuff that makes up most common folk's everyday life. 'Nough said.
