I loved the beginning of this book. It set the whole pace of the story with sheer daring. Many of the books ive come across gently urge a reader into a story by introducing the character while keeping you interested long enough for a story to develop. its familiar and as a reader it is comfortable and expected. However it is a welcome surprise to have come across a writer who will throw you into an exhilarating bit of adventure right from the outset, and then introduce the character. A great character too.
Story is the young thief who serves under a criminal lord and is bound to him, roaming the roof tops at night to steal to earn her place in the criminal gang. her drunken friend and formerly disgraced mage is her only source of comfort. but things change fast in the impoverished lives of this unusual pair as dragon magic, plot and intrigue unravel in a clever story that brings in the foul ambition of dark God like beings who interfere and meddle with the lives of the mortals.
the wit and charm of the main characters and their struggle is so well crafted it becomes so very involving as the battle between good and darkness unravels with some excellent twists.
it is a fast paced story and you will no doubt race to the end to see what happens and even though it is a full length novel it seems like it has ended far too soon. it seems like i need more. where is book two? i think there's plenty of scope for me to have another and i would like to have it now.

Orison eBook Daniel Swensen Reviews
Story's life began when Galon purchased her with her brother Crux and she became his "second story girl." Now she works as a thief in the city of Calushain, owing him a hefty fee and facing harsh punishment if he ever finds out about her plans.
Wrynn's life ended when the Imperial strands bound his magic for daring to refuse service to the Landris Empire. Now he lives as a drunk within Calushain; working the magic that could earn a living would blow his hands off at the wrist.
The Dragons have certain whims and wishes for the humans who worship them. Penumbra wants her comeuppance, and has left an object within Calushain for the mortals to find. Whomever receives the orb can wield its power, at the price of Penumbra's control. Will it be the young thief who's trying to leave the city, the sorcerer who wants his power back? The Queen of Storms or her beast-like warborn servant? Or worst of all, the Empire?
Orison is a very well-written fantasy novel within a new world that is just beginning to tell its tale. Beginning with full-blown action and ending with just as much vigor, the book doesn't waste a single paragraph. Every page is filled with drama, intrigue, or emotion. I anticipate the next in the series.
I commend the author for keeping this book accessible to a wide audience. As a parent, I appreciate when I can read a book which was written for adults then hand it to my middle-school daughter. Orison is such a book. Not pedantic or "dumbed down" at all, it still avoids the language or sex that would make it inaccessible to a young or religious audience. This is a novel you can give to any fantasy lovers who have worked their way up to that reading level.
Daniel Swensen puts together a robust world without subjecting the reader to a massive information dump at the start - this skill makes me a very happy reader. )
WHAT I LIKED
----------------
- Wrynn and Dunnac. Their relationship and interactions are witty and endearing. I enjoyed the history beyond both characters, and I feel like we've only scratched the surface of those guys.
- Ashen. He may well be my favorite character. His loyalty, clear understanding of himself and others, and conviction had me reading anxiously to get to new bits from his perspective.
- The dragon religion. One of the things I enjoy most in fantasy is the religious development of the world. I find the religious structure, faith, and conflict created by Swenson quite intriguing.
- The overall story both entertained and satisfied me.
WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE
-------------------
- I felt far more attached to Wrynn, Dunnac, and Ashen, than I did to Story. I didn't dislike Story or anything, I just felt like her background and current conflict were less interesting than the personal demons the support characters struggled with.
- I kind of don't like the name "Story". But that's clearly an issue with me, not the author.
- Sometimes the book dragged a little for me. In some scenes/passages, it seemed like the main purpose was to provide the reader with info or character development, but aside from passing on the info, nothing actually *happened* in those passages. To be fair, I like a lot of action and minimal downtime in my books.
I realize as I'm writing this book that I'm assuming this is the first of a series. I should point out that I don't feel like things were left unfinished in this book. Instead, I'm assuming there's more coming because I *want* to read more about what happens with Wrynn, Dunnac, and Ashen.
