SpiderMan Kraven Last Hunt Marvel Premiere Classic J M DeMatteis Mike Zeck Books Reviews
Amazing Story well ahead of its time, a classic from nearly 30 years ago, an absolute must have for any Spidey lovers - or in this case haters as well.
Undoubtadly one of the best Spider-Man stories ever put to paper, Kraven's Last Hunt still holds up even all these years later. J.M. DeMatteis (Formerly Known as the Justice League) and Mike Zeck (Punisher Circle of Blood) are responsible for what is perhaps one of the darkest Spidey stories ever, which finds classic villain Kraven the Hunter developing a plot to snare Spidey once and for all, and it works. Kraven captures Spidey and buries him alive, and then proceeds to don his costume and go on a rampage through the city. He takes on the murderous Vermin before Spidey finally breaks free of his underground confines, which sets the stage for Kraven's dramatic last stand. Like no other writer before him, DeMatteis gets inside Kraven's head to the point where the reader is sympathetic towards him like never before, and he even gets inside Spidey's head as well to the point where it becomes harder to see where the man ends and the spider begins. Mike Zeck's artwork is still spectacular to this day as well, helping make a dark tale all the more darker. This story is one of the few Marvel titles that is worth a Marvel Premiere hardcover package, and it features some great early pencil designs from Zeck as well as a foreword from DeMatteis that details the original conception of the story (it was originally a Wonder Man idea for God's sake) to what we get here. All in all, Kraven's Last Hunt remains today what it has always been, an essential Spider-Man tale in the character's long mythos.
Do you like Dark Knight Returns? Watchmen? Want a Spider-man story with a similar feel? This is it. Don't say Spidey never has dark times. This is the darkest. It's a shame that the title is a somewhat spoiler. The original story was just called a "six part storyline" with different chapter titles. A better title would be "The Death of Spider-man" since this one is way better than that garbage "Death of Superman" storyline. It also didn't bother with a media hype/blitz proclaiming the death of Spidey like Superman and Captain America had.
Fantastic read! I had been wanting to read this for quite a time but it is impossible to find a decent priced hard copy. I ended up getting a digital copy because it went on sale and I am very glad I did. This definitely met and exceeded my expectations. I liked seeing all the perspective and insight from Kraven's point of view. This was unlike other Spider-Man stories I have read and I thoroughly enjoyed it, beginning to end.
I LOVED THIS BOOK! I got it at the recommendation of a friend and am I glad I listended. The story really isn't about Peter so much. Its really almost all about Kraven, and the lengths he'll go to to prove that he is the superior to Spiderman. He's always seen Spidey as an elusive prey, as the one creature that taunted him and beat him. But what happens when Kraven realizes that behind that mask and web shooters and powers, that Peter was just a regular nerd who got tapped on the shoulder by fate? That the one man who always beat him, was just that; a man.
In short, the story is awesome. The whole of it takes place at night and in the rain, but it is a solid read. All the parts with Kraven had chills sent down my spine and just kept me wanting to read more. At the end, you even feel sad for Kraven, but even also a bit of respect for him, as he finally accomplished what he always wanted. To be the best hunter ever
Kravens last hunt is at its core about kraven trying to understand and surpass Spiderman. It's the now rather cliche "man vs spider" question played out as kraven takes a bunch of hallucinogens to sense patterns soul or something. He also captures and buries Peter alive, as the cover indicates. This is all done through the deletions psychodrama, as both Peter and kraven have these really crazy looking hallucinations about spiders and the like.
It's a fine story, but the timeline seems anit off for me. Peter's supposedly buried for two weeks, yet he's still able to fight and such, let alone alive, after going so long without food waters or even air. I guess his spider powers kept him alive, but that was the one crazy thing in what was otherwise a faulty realistic story in some ways. Also all the crazed thought boxes Peter and kraven had got kind of over used by the end.
The story is spider-man at its best, and honestly my favorite serious spider-man comic as apposed to some of the fun goofy stuff out there. the way the characters are written and think two or three things at once back and forth feels like such realistic dynamic internal dialog compared to the generic slosh you generally get. a good way to explain it is in most comics thoughts seem like broad statements on what someone is doing, here people think something and try to push the thoughts away with something else but they cant escape the thoughts nagging them. its just so well done and I think thats why people feel kraven is such a cool character in this because he feels so real! the story also gets compared to batman comics a lot but to me its a lot more like watchmen with all the symbolism involved in the panels.
Okay I'm dumb. I purchase this on accident because I thought this was the graphic novel. It is not. This is the novel based on the graphic novel.... I'm going to have to return this and buy the actual graphic novel...
